Asbyrgi is one of the two campsites within the Jokulsargljufur site of Vatnajokull National Park. The other campsite is at Vesturdalur. The campsite in Asbyrgi is larger and has more facilities; there are sites for tents, tent campers and motor homes. The campsite is equipped with facilities such as toilets, showers, laundry, barbeques, internet and electricity for campers (48 x 1500 W and 16 x 900 W). Only 300 m from the campsite is one of Vatnajokull National Park´s Visitor Centre. At the Visitor Centre you can get information about the National Park and its surroundings, nature and geology. At the Centre is also an interesting exhibition about geology and nature. The Visitor Centre is open daily from May 1st to September 30th.
Jokulsargljufur is ideal territory for walking and hiking. A marked path leads through the park from Dettifoss waterfall to the campsite at Asbyrgi, generally threading its way along the Jokulsargljufur canyon. It can take up to two days to complete this walk, but many shorter options are available from the campsite at Asbyrgi.

The campsite at Asbyrgi lies along road 85. From Husavik town there are 65 km east to Asbyrgi. During the summer time it is also possible to reach Asbyrgi via road 864, coming from road 1 in the south.
