The "New Franconian Lake District", 30 km south of Nuremberg, has only been created in recent years. Its core is formed by the three lakes: Altmühlsee, Rothsee and Brombachsee. These lakes are the result of the largest water management construction project in the history of Bavaria. Water from the rainier areas of the Altmühl and Danube is to be transferred to the rainier Regnitz-Main area.
